Starting out, we want to do away with one frequently mistaken idea about casinos.  Although the cards you get dealt are purely random, players win more at blackjack by using effective strategy rather than relying on luck.  Do not believe that getting dealt quality cards is the only way to win.  In the game of blackjack, you have many chances to better your hand.  Seeing the game this way will assist you in picking out those chances and deciding when to make the best of them.

Another name for Blackjack is "twenty-one", since that is the maximum hand you can get.  Naturally, your objective when deciding on your moves is not only to get twenty-one points, but also to get nearer to twenty-one than the dealer without going over.  Each card has an assigned point score.  The value of each numbered cards is written on its face, from two to ten.  Picture cards are worth ten points each.  Aces can be worth either one or eleven, which makes it the most useful and most important card in the deck.

A hand of blackjack starts with the dealer dealing two cards to each player face up.  The dealer also receives two cards; one face up and the other face down. If the player's first two cards are an ace and a ten-value card, that results in a "natural" and equals twenty-one for an automatic win.  Every player wishes to get a natural blackjack, but most of the time you'll be trying to improve your hand.

Once the first deal is completed, players have numerous choices.  A player may choose to stick with his first two cards, or "stand" on his hand.  If he wants another card to try and improve his hand, he can "hit".  He can continue to hit his hand until he either chooses to stand or goes over twenty-one points.  If a player’s hand goes over twenty-one, he "busts" and loses the hand.

Players may also decide to split, double down, or surrender their hands.  These alternatives are more complex and various casinos have variations on the rules with respect to each option.  A player can split if the first two cards have the same value.  The player will make an additional bet, then the dealer will split the two cards, deal another card to each one and create two new hands.  The player will then play each new hand in the same way as a normal hand.  Some casinos allow for multiple splits if one of the split hands is eligible to be split again.

If the player wishes to "double down", he will get only one more card and make another bet.  A double down is a common strategy for a hand value of eleven, in case a ten-value card comes next.  Casinos may allow players to double down on any hand, while others may limit players to only making this move with starting hands of certain values.

When a player chooses to surrender, they get back half their bet in exchange for giving up their hand.  This move is only available after the player gets their first two cards, but before they decide to hit or stand.
